Surrealist artists of the early 20th century created the collaborative game “Exquisite Corpses” to push the boundaries of realism and create some wild and wacky visual art. The magic of this visual arts game is that each addition to the “Exquisite Corpse” is made with the paper folded so that the full image isn’t revealed until everyone’s added something. In this Church of Art workshop, make Exquisite Corpses with a combination of collage, paint pens, markers, and colored pencils. The results are hilarious, charming, strange, sometimes thought-provoking, and always unexpected.

Fun fact: While often shown as a human-like form with folds between the head, torso, legs, and feet, the name “Exquisite Corpses” actually came from one of the game’s original word-play versions that delivered the delightfully bizarre phrase: “The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine.”
