El Grito

El Grito Portland is the premier Latiné cultural and arts celebration in the Pacific Northwest, serving as a vibrant tribute to the independence of Mexico and several Latin American nations, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile, and Belize. Held annually on Sep 15 and 16 at the Rose Quarter Commons, this free festival honors rich traditions and Indigenous roots through an authentic showcase of heritage.

The festival’s cultural offerings include:

Music and Dance: Attendees can experience live performances by mariachi bands, folkloric ballet dancers, Aztec dancers, and various Latin American musical groups.

Art and Handcrafted Goods: The “Poderosas Pavilion” is a dedicated market featuring local Latiné artisans and Indigenous artists who showcase and sell handcrafted items, including traditional embroidery, jewelry, and apothecary products.

Culinary Traditions: The event features a wide range of authentic Mexican cuisine and traditional dishes from local vendors, along with refreshing drinks and Mexican-inspired Northwest beer.

Traditional Ceremonies: A central highlight is the official “Ceremony of El Grito,” a powerful reenactment of the 1810 civic call for independence led by the Mexican Consul.
